How to Reframe Past Challenges as Valuable Job Skills
Purpose: This reflection exercise helps you use the 3SHIFT framework (Letting Out, Letting Go, Letting In) to acknowledge challenges, release limiting beliefs, and reframe experiences into skills that strengthen your job readiness.
(Naming the Experience)
- What specific challenges in your past work or personal life still feel heavy or unresolved when you think about them?
- How did these challenges impact your confidence, relationships, or career growth at the time?
- If you could write one honest sentence to describe how those moments felt, what would it be?
(Releasing Limiting Beliefs)
- What negative belief about yourself do you still carry because of those challenges?
- How has holding on to that belief limited the way you present yourself in opportunities like interviews?
- What truth can you embrace today that replaces this limiting belief with a healthier perspective?
(Reframing into Strengths)
- What valuable skills or qualities did those challenges help you develop (e.g., resilience, problem-solving, adaptability)?
- How could these strengths positively shape the way you contribute in a new role?
- If you had to share one past challenge as a story of growth in an interview, how would you frame it to highlight your value?
